KC Star Bridal Spectacular

July 26, 2008

The bridal show brought out the best... the best brides and grooms, mothers
and bride's maids, as well as the best in merchants, both new and old.  (Thanks
for the great food!)  We wish the best to the new merchants we met.  Some
are featured on our blog.

We also want to announce the winner of the KC Star Bridal Show drawing from
our studio. Rachel Blair won a Love Story Engagement Session and a Coffeetable
Album worth $900.00! She has since then decided to allow us the honor of
photographing her on her wedding day next July.  We are looking forward to it.

That's all for now...Paul

Betty Tillotson's Dance Troupe

Last week our friend and Waldo neighbor, Betty Tillotson of Betty Tillotson’s Studio of Dance,
held her annual dance recital at the historic Folly Theatre in Downtown Kansas City.  This is the
second years we have photographed her students, and the first time we have seen their magic
on the stage.  Boy…this crew really blew us away! What a talented group of dancers!

The production was truly first class, from the location, to the costumes, to the set-design
and the music choices…not to mention the lovely choreography. It is clear why Betty’s dance school
has thrived for well over thirty-five years. She and her instructors are truly passionate about their
craft, and it is clear that that same passion is passed on to the younger generation.

Our hats go off to the Betty Tillotson Dancers, and good luck with your upcoming performance
down in Branson, Missouri!

Laura's Couture

Last week we had the pleasure of helping our friend Laura, of Laura’s Couture, with a
photo shoot of her gorgeous wedding boutique... (commercial photography is one of my
favorite mediums)!   Laura needed new images for her website and we had a great time
photographing her newest collections.

Not only were the colors, textures and fabrics spectacular, but Laura has designed her space
in such an elegant and understated way… you almost feel like you are in a fine art  gallery.
We’ve worked many years with Laura and her husband Marty, and have always loved their
style and professionalism.  Having the chance to leisurely play and photographically experiment
with her boutique space was a treat.  I captured quite a few great images, in part because of
Laura’s impeccable design sensibility.

If you are a bride and still checking out gown options, I highly recommend calling Laura.
Her taste is superb…classic, timeless and always sophisticated.  I believe that you really can
find your “dream” dress with her guidance.

P.S. Another awesome touch at Laura’s is the refreshing mimosa you are handed as you
start to peruse the options.  Not bad, eh?

Julie and Michael

I first met Julie at Redemptorist while I was photographing another wedding.  She was scoping
out the church and did not even know the couple.  When she came into the Studio, we hit it off
right away.  I knew Michael and Julie would make a lovely couple, but they definitely exceeded my
expectations.  Her form fitting beaded dress was from Ida’s Bridal Salon, and could not have looked
any better than it did on her.  Their Reception was at the Uptown Theater where Julie and her
closest friends danced to a Dirty Dancing Song for Michael, but everyone enjoyed it!                ...Lori

Hannah/Hammersmith 05-31-08

Mallory was a spectacularly beautiful bride and Jack looked great at her side.  The day went very smoothly.
With the ceremony and formal stuff out of the way, Mallory, Jack and their friends finally got to goof off
and have some fun!  Paul and I captured some lovely romantic images of the couple at her mother’s home!
The Ritz Charles was gorgeous, as usual, with the help of Dan Meiner’s Flowers!  Thanks for a
Great Night Mallory, Jack, and Families!                                ...Lori

The Sanchez Family

New Life!

Patricia, a new VanDeusen customer, called us with news that she was having
her first baby and wanted to preserve the pregnancy memories (the good ones!)
with beautiful portraits.  Well… Just a few weeks later, after the
Pregnancy Portraits were taken, we were happy to learn that Patricia
had delivered a beautiful, healthy baby girl!  Both Patricia and her husband Joel met
in High School in the Dominican Republic. They now practice medicine here in Kansas
City.  It was wonderful to learn that both of their parents were coming to town, from
the Dominican Republic, to help with the first month of the baby’s life.  It was
a greatpleasure for us when the entire crew came in to have their first family
portrait taken withtheir brand new baby girl!

Congratulations Sanchez Family!

The Wedding of Michael and Lisa

Everywhere I looked was the making of an award winning photograph.  the lighting in Mission Hills
Country Club was just what I have been looking for, a damp and dark day for most but not for creating
fine art photography of a wedding party.  This is the second wedding I have done for this great family
(her sister is expecting sometime this summer).  Back to the wedding which was at Visitation Catholic
Church.  This is a grand church after its' remodel.  The photos of the couple leaving were just what they
ordered after the rain stopped.  The rain did not stop their party.  Did I say party?!?                         Paul

A note from Keira...

Hello Friends!
You might know me as the Portrait Director here at VanD, but you may not know that I am also a
mixed media artist.  I've continued to paint since graduating from art school at the Good Ol' University
of Kansas back in the late 90s. (I was a CHILD, I tell you..a Child!) Anyway... I've been fortunate
enough to show my work at a number of galleries and venues in the region, and am looking forward
to the progress of a new series I am working on called "Sisyphus Needs a Manicure"...(Inspired by that
exhausting, oft appropriated Greek myth.) Showing soon at a blog near you!

The focus of my paintings is usually tied in with the Jungian notion of collective memory, dreamscape and
the figure. -And sometimes ice cream. Actually, always  ice cream. Paintings are never executed without
frozen deserts involved...in some sort of context. NEVER. :)

Anyway..
Here are some samples of some of my work.
Have a peaceful summer. I look forward to seeing you soon!

A collection of images painted as the set design for the production of
"Joan the Maid", 2002, Princess Squid Theatre Company at The NEXT Space

Alice in Londontown, 2003, Mixed Media on Reeves BFK Paper 38"x45"
-Painting based on my experience living for a brief time in London, England

Onions, Parfaits and Others, figurative gesture drawings,2007, Watercolor on laser paper, 8.5x11...
Three examples out of 100s!
-Excellent excercise for tapping into the energy of the body, moving or stationary, in space.

It is so much fun to hear from old Friends!

We had the pleasure of photographing Becky and Rick's wedding a little while back.  Well, we had
lost touch for a few years and, -SURPRISE!- Becky gave us a call.  It was so nice to hear from her
and to meet their beautiful addition to the Roberson crew...Miss Brooke!

My, how time flies! It was great to reconnect with them and get the scoop on how things are going.
Thank You, Roberson Family, for the chance to photograph this new phase in your lives. Carpe Diem!

West Virginian Gallery Opening

Scott McMillian, my son, had an art opening this month in West Virginia, at the Pierce Gallery at
West Virginia University Tech.  The show was titled "Object and Drawings".  He designed the three
dimensional art of wire and rice paper.  He included a large scale drawing of his art to accompany
each piece.  His influences in art started at home as a young man.  From there, he moved on to
Johnson County Community College.  He graduated with a Fine Arts Degree from K.U.  He now lives
in West Virginia with his wife and their two boys.  Scott's art will be featured in our new V Gallery
soon.  Prints and originals are for sale.

P.S. yes another artist in the McMillian family.  (You know my daugher, Lori, is a photographic artist.
My wife is a painter and a ceramicist.)
